How do high-rises influence urban development? What idea of a city do they follow? The silhouette of Zürich has changed in recent years. Whereas previously there were only a few high-rise buildings, today they line up in clusters in designated areas around Pfingstweidstrasse, on the track fields or around the railway stations. High-rises as emblems of an urban and global way of life are experiencing a new heyday. In their immediate context, they often behave with little differentiation and appear isolated.
What is the urban planning and programmatic potential of the high-rise? In Zürich they are predominantly monofunctional, i.e. designed as office or residential towers. Rarely are different uses combined and stacked vertically. As a rule, they are only accessible to a certain milieu and do little for the adjoining street space and city quarter at ground level. High-rise buildings tend to be exclusive. In addition, according to current building law, they do not contribute to densification.
During the semester, we will develop high-rise buildings as polyfunctional towers in which a high proportion of public commercial and communal use is planned in addition to residential use. The aim of this programme is to ensure urbanity and a social mix. We will set these towers at locations outside the planned areas in Zurich, thereby provoking new visions for the city: high-rises on the lakeshore, on the ridges of hills, in the city forests or along the rivers.
The semester will take place in cooperation with Professor Joseph Schwartz and the artist Shirana Shahbazi. In the first few weeks, we will use 1:50 models to develop abstract supporting structures that can accommodate various scales and programmes: for example, the small-scale nature of living in combination with the large structure of a market hall or auditorium. We will then use miniatures to deepen the narratives of the projects. Together with Shirana Shahbazi, we will search for images of a new city.
The students of the design studio will spend a week in the mock-up «vacancy - no vacancy» on the roof terrace of the HIL to test this special form of living and public infrastructure for themselves. |
