S3E1: THE GOOD NEIGHBOUR / Living

Beschreibung
des Entwurfs-programmes

“The book you need might not necessarily be the one you were looking for. It might, in fact, be the one next to it. The books are shelved around the law of the good neighbour, meaning that the library’s collection is organised thematically instead of by author, title, or publication date.” - The Warburg Institute THE GOOD NEIGHBOUR begins with the simple observation that no building stands alone. Every work of architecture inherits a context and, in turn, becomes the context for another. Between neighbours unfolds a quiet dialogue, where proximity gives rise to harmony and tension, continuity and difference. No masterpiece is ever complete in isolation; its meaning is continually reshaped by what stands beside it. The Good Neighbour is therefore less a question of resemblance than of relation. It asks how architecture responds to what already exists and how neighbouring buildings, together, construct a shared world. Within this horizon, living, working, producing and leisure are understood as intertwined ways of inhabiting, each shaped by the spaces – and the neighbours – with whom they coexist. This semester, The Good Neighbour I is dedicated to LIVING: to the countless ways in which life unfolds beside other lives, other rooms and other buildings. Our inquiry turns towards proximity and distance, encounter and coexistence, intimacy and exposure, care and conflict. It begins with the simple observation that no building exists alone. Every wall faces another wall, every window another window, every threshold opens onto another threshold. Between these shared edges unfolds the ordinary architecture of everyday life: habits and rituals, gestures and encounters, moments of friction and solidarity, the familiar and the unexpected. As each building quietly transforms the meaning of its neighbour, so too every fragment gathered here acquires new resonances through proximity. Together they invite students to wander across different scales and voices, where the domestic, the urban and the imaginary continuously reshape one another.
