DO WE PRACTICE WHAT WE TEACH?
DO WE TEACH WHAT WE PRACTICE?
This Master studio – BA SEM V & VI, MA SEM I,II and III – is a twisted continuation of the 33,3% - on the INTERFERENCE, INTERVENTION and INTRODUCTION as act of attitude - at the same time another introduction of interest. This time on the idea PRAC-TEACH. On how PRACTICE and TEACHING relates.
That this year’s IEA lectures are titled PRACTICE WHAT WE TEACH? is not about a coincidence or luck but comes as an extra motivation to make this MASTER STUDIO happen.
The idea is as clear as unpredictable. A PRACTICE OF THE SCHOOL lends three of their practice projects to be available for CHANGE. In a timespan of 14 weeks the project will be studied – OBSERVATION - and demanded – REFLECTION – as also twisted – IMAGINATION.
The time of today demands CHANGE and CHANGE demands CHANGE. How AVAILABLE are we for CHANGE and how CHANGE can be make AVAILABLE still after: HOW TO NOT ONLY RE-USE but also PREPARE RE-USE: from RE-USE to (P)RE-USE.
This master studio will be held 7 semesters, each Fall semester. The results of these 7 semester will be documented after and discussed broadly.
Envisioned practices are ARNO BRANDLHUBER B+, 6A, BRUTHER, THEO HOTZ, CHRISTIAN KEREZ, NOa
For the first PILOT SEMESTER the work of the PRACTICE BEHIND / TEACHING BEHIND this MASTER STUDIO will be our own PRACTICE – in the many appearances it got throughout the years: JDV A (+IV), A DVVT and today A JDVIV IVJDVA + ETC.
The projects ROT-ELLEN-BERG (Melden, BE) , CARITAS (Melle, BE) and PALAIS DES EXPOSITIONS (Charleroi, BE) give perspective to housing, care and culture; private, shared and public; urban, suburban and rural.
In MOVEMENT 0 – OBSERVATION / 3 weeks site visit is included – over the first weekend – documenting and illustrating are the ambition. Drawing and model are key.
In MOVEMENT I – REFLECTION / 3 weeks discussion are core – norm and normative, program and life, economy, and ecology; etc…- and writing and talking but also drawing and testing are key.
IN MOVEMENT II + III – IMAGINATION / 3 + 3 weeks action guided by attitude is key. The (P)RE-USE is the outcome. |

This studio will be a small studio and will work in groups.
Each group will be composed by 3 students.
One of the 3 built projects will be allocated to each group by lottery during the first week.
The studio is divided in 3+1 movement: 9 weeks of collective work + 3 weeks of individual imagination.
3 review MOMENTS will take place and we will invite guests to share their knowledge supporting each project.
This studio will work on the understanding of existing venues, their tangible and intangible context, construction and tectonic. The (P)RE-USE is the outcome. Again.
We will approach the project by exploring the abacus of instruments available for young architects: sketches, models, analog and digital drawings, narrative and images will be key for each project. |
