Beschreibung des Entwurfs-programmes |
Monasteries in Switzerland face an uncertain future: fewer people are choosing to live behind the walls of the convent and the few residents that remain there are getting old.
Most monastic buildings –and even monastic compounds– have evolved over centuries and adapted to new circumstances. Adding, re-using and adapting are inherent to their presence through time.
Nevertheless, the vacancy of entire complexes arises structural and urban problems. Most of the times these empty structures cannot be maintained nor is it possible to find an appropriate new function nor is it appropriate to demolish them from the perspective of collective memory and historic preservation.
The studio will discuss about new programmatic conditions and reuse strategies for monasteries near the old town of Solothurn.
The studio will continue questioning the cultural dimension of everyday life within a temporary community, as a powerful agent for social and spatial transformations. Rituals, agreements, consensus and negotiations will define collective life; the relationship between the event and its "staging" will establish its nuances.
Based on creativity and collaborative dynamics, this time the programmatic platform will be an Artist Residency Centre, understood as an interdisciplinary laboratory, which will integrate collective living and performing arts practices with resources, research and inspiration from Humanities, Sciences and Visual Arts. Each year, collectives and individual artists will take up residence there to live and do critical research, developing works that challenge and extend the existing borders of artistic practice.
Artists-in-Residence will share their creative process with the community through open rehearsals, workshops, shows and art talks.
Students will be invited to conceive their projects as environments that might redefine experiences for communal life, stressing existing forms of public and private spaces to develop new contexts for intimacy, creation, performance and social exchange.

Lernziele |
Architectural design is the outcome of a complex articulation where many levels convey.
The Studio proposes a method to tackle that complexity, aiming to increase our degrees of control over the reality that the project prefigures.
We will think and operate on the architectural project from a precise (but arbitrary) platform of three layers: Relation, Atmosphere and Material. We will understand them as interdependent systems; their interlocking will define the built reality of the proposal and the spatial experiences it implies.
Relational systems organize the different parts of the architectural project in order to promote or reflect a certain type of interaction, even social behaviour. Different configurations would link to different cultural and political set-ups, revealing specific notions of freedom and hierarchies within the building and, ultimately, between the people that inhabits it.
Atmospheric systems define specific ambiance qualities for space and will allow us to speculate on how different atmospheres unfold different spatial experiences and, from an intimate perspective, how space can generate personal and collective memories, triggering feelings and affection.
Material systems involve physical and material conditions. Structure, matter and building strategies are part of this realm: they generate specific atmospheric and spatial qualities and give substance to the ambiance where life unfolds. Thus, the architectural pursue of certain atmospheric qualities will conduct our research on material and building strategies.
The Studio will relate these three systems associating and assembling collections of images. They will be our main design devices and practical working tools to articulate and conduct visual discourses on the projects.
Image collections and conceptual model-making will be the starting point for the personal research that the Studio promotes. This way, we aim to dismantle prejudice and to work with the uncanny, providing space for all students to widen-up repertoires and develop expressive resources both at the design and the representational levels.
Each proposal will establish its own fields of action, rules, interests and restrictions. |
