Beschreibung des Entwurfs-programmes |
The Alcazaba Cadima was the first urban settlement of Muslim Granada, after its refoundation by Zawi ben Ziri, around the year 1010. Seemingly a piece of land-art, today the north side of the fortress wall remains standing, dividing the new urban developments, the Sacromonte and the top edge of Albayzin, where a seemingly derelict area as big as the Alhambra is populated by gypsy caves, transient structures and paddle cactus. Today the area remains a field of opportunity, a place where the role of the architect as a negotiator between different scales of landscape, nature and artifice, topography and construction is vindicated and celebrated.
This Design Course will explore the complementary relationship between landscape and urban context, prompting students to create permanent sites of transient residence and activity for visitors, students and residents, but more importantly to engage in an ongoing discussion on how the construction of architecture informs cultural, social and physical landscapes.
Group Work: In the first two weeks of the semester students will take the Renaissance Palace of Charles V in the Alhambra -Muslim architecture- as a case study, focusing on the way the architectural encounter with the adjacent Arrayanes Courtyard is addressed. This will help students understand the importance of context, construction and geometry as a transhistorical reality, irrespective of the particular epoch or style of each building.
