Beschreibung des Entwurfs-programmes |
Construction is the DNA of architecture. From making by
hand to the making of the city we shall explore how construction
is the literal building block of architecture and the metaphorical
trace of experience and meaning.
Making, reimagined in drawing, will lead us from full-scale
structures around the department outwards, towards the city, in
ever-larger spatial investigations. Using improvisation and careful
observation, we will seek new architectural possibilities in the
world that surrounds us. And just like the bricoleur uses what is
at hand, we will use and reuse history and memory just like we
reuse space and construction to create spaces and buildings for an
unknown future.
In the spring semester, we will return to making but directed
towards the wider environment in which humans and architecture
interact by making a garden. You will be the pioneers of a longterm
project to be continued, nurtured and expanded by others in
the future. Nature will no longer be outside of human action. It
will be the new reality in which history, space and materials are
turned over in the architectural imagination. Over the following
years at eth, you will have the opportunity to experience the
passage of time over your own work; the garden will grow while
architecture ages. We shall work alone and we shall work together
to test the limits of individual and collective imaginations.

Thematische und methodische Schwerpunkte |
Entwurf, Konstruktion |
| |
Lernziele |
Analysis
Undertakes several types of research simultaneously including:
-qualitative site/building analysis (photographic, sketching)
-systematic analysis (inventory of uses, material history, social history, etc…)
-technical analysis (geology, climate, ecology)
-architectural language
Interpret and synthesise information above into a concise and ongoing knowledge base for the design project:
-Assimilate small, fragmentary observations into broad understanding of place, building, etc…
-With reference to precedents, demonstrate the relationship between architectural and material reality and programmatic purpose.
Architectural design
-Design a small sized building incorporating a significant public space, external spaces and other supporting amenities.
-Develop a tectonic strategy as central theme in design project.
-Use building design to demonstrate understanding of wider landscape/context.
-Use building design to propose new ways of inhabiting or experiencing wider landscape.
Technical
-Develop method of analysis of a central material or construction thesis in term of environmental performance.
-Demonstrate understanding of principal structural, environmental and constructional performance of precedent studies
-Develop a technical thesis within design project in respect to at least one of the following: structure /material research / environmental performance
-Through model making, demonstrate understanding of fundamental material properties in everyday materials (timber, paper, cardboard, plywood, plaster, etc…)
Representation
-Develop a deep understanding of the status and purpose of architectural representation: drawing, sketch, model, text, photograph.
-Learn analytical use of 3D digital modeling including the output of 2D information from 3D model.
-Develop critical ‘eye’ in photographic recording of place.
-Develop critical understanding of orthographic drawing: artifact versus data? (including scale, line weight, surface, construction, etc…)
-Develop ability to make fast sketch models and complex presentation models with precise conceptual purpose
General skills
-Demonstrate ability to work, learn and communicate as a whole studio, in big and small groups and individually
-Demonstrate high level of technical and critical standard in 2D CAD drafting.
-Develop ability to assimilate a broad range of working practices |
