Fire: Building in Stromboli

Beschreibung
des Entwurfs-programmes 

The ancients saw fire as the primeval element, the origin of the formation of matter. In our field, architecture, fire is associated with energy, with the thermal adaptation needed for human life, and for handling and producing the materials (iron, glass, food) that are fundamental for survival. Fire as a synonym for the flow of life, which architecture serves. Taking this as our initial reflection, this semester we will be imagining projects on the island of Stromboli (38º N 15º W), one of Europe’s last remaining active volcano. We will be designing rooms and spaces where human life interacts with the primeval flow of nature, with the energy spewed forth by the volcano. Medium scale, precision is required. Lernziele 

Our mission is, of course, to teach people how to design: to imagine in physical terms a new reality and, furthermore, to be able to make it possible – to build it. My interest is more methodological and abstract – more instrumental than stylistic – and is situated between awareness of the students’ freedom of choice (we, the teachers, ask the questions; they, the students, provide the answers) and the need to provide the instruments and the appropriate framework for their action.
