des Entwurfs-programmes 

In this last year of the Chair, we will look back with fresh eyes at fifteen years of research and design work. We will reflect on our archive, the collective endeavour of around a thousand students, and see what happens when the Palais Royal meets Sophie Calle, and when the Bank of England meets Theaster Gates. With invited collaborators and using new tools, this year we will take full advantage of finally having this overview. This semester we will work on a large site in Zurich that while part of the city’s public infrastructure has always been a territory with limited public access. A place where the slaughter of animals and the distribution of meat will soon end, and public conversations within the local neighbourhood have already begun about imagining the future of this place. The city is assessing the heritage values of the site, and its economic and programmatic potential. For us, the future of the Schlachthof is an opportunity to heal the difficult karma of the site and to imagine what the civic could mean in a future when different actors, and not just humans, are given agency, where diverse ideas of programme and not just those of production, are allowed to flourish. We are interested in arranging the site in looser and more iterative ways so that new uses and constituencies can be accommodated as they emerge as part of an ongoing process. The mosque, the hospice, the caravanserai were places of care and exchange where society would both arrange and represent itself, where space became civic. Can we imagine the grand hall, the access yards, and the warehouses of the Schlachthof becoming locations for pleasure, care, propinquity and for the enactment of new kinds of civic life in Zurich.

Lernziele 

The studio is a place for research and design, a place where ideas are productively and generously developed and shared. Teachers and students are equally engaged in this process and although the former are responsible for setting the overall themes and structures of the studio, everyone’s contribution to the project is equally valuable. The work of the semester is thought of as a single body of research with separate chapters developed around the references, themes and sites. Students generally work in groups of two or three on their projects. We meet every Tuesday and Wednesday, and it is important that students are present in the studio for as much of those days as possible, for scheduled events as much as for informal ones. A minimum of three more formal teaching sessions will take the form of workshops and interim reviews during the course of the semester. The expectations in terms of themes and kinds of work will be communicated to the students in advance of these sessions, as will the content and organisation for the final teaching events at the end of the semester. We are interested in the quality of the research and the design work that emerges in the studio, and this quality is embodied in equal parts in conceptual readings of the project - in the written and spoken presentations, in the archives and collections, as it is in more formal work - in drawings, models, photography and time based media. Precise ideas can only be communicated through careful and thoughtful work. The conceptual and the concrete will, in different ways, be present at each stage of the project and therefore the final mark is an assessment of this full range of work, as well as of the contribution and quality of work each student has made during the whole of the semester. The environment of the studio is intended to be one of mutual support and respect. Any ideas that will enhance this spirit of collaboration are welcome and if any member of the studio does not feel adequately supported, they should inform a member of the chair.
