Next Door – The Tectonics of Sharing |

Beschreibung |
The single-family house is Switzerland’s most common and most contested building type. Built for one family, inherited by another, extended, subdivided, sold, often to be demolished. It carries within it the changing definitions of who belongs together and how. Who counts as a household? What does it mean to share a roof, a table, a kitchen? Every house embeds a unique local cosmology: the rituals, habits, and beliefs of the people who inhabit it. All elements of the house – stairs, windows, walls, columns, doors, roof – participate in the choreography of daily living. How spaces are used, how thresholds are negotiated, how life unfolds room by room. Can the extra-ordinary and the everyday, understood through careful observation, become the design inspiration for highly specific and articulate houses? The studio takes the Swiss border as its starting point; single-family houses along an unrolled section that runs through a diversity of landscapes, densities, languages, and ways of living. We will visit them, meet their inhabitants, and ask: who lives here, and on what terms? The first part of the semester is dedicated to this observation. Working in pairs, we will travel the length of Switzerland’s perimeter, documenting households and the subtle differences that proximity to a border produces. Our findings will take the form of short films. The second part is dedicated to design. Each group will propose a house for two or more people, households, or constellations that are not necessarily a family in the traditional sense. Together, we will explore a tectonic of sharing. The model is our primary design tool. In the studio, we will also cook together, eat together, argue and celebrate. Coming together is not only the subject of the work; it is its method. As the semester unfolds, from observation to film to design, we will be accompanied by guests, collaborators, and the families we meet along the way. |

TELLING STORIES OF REAL COMMUNITIES Develop a way of seeing your site and its social and spatial conditions through film, using the moving image as a primary tool for observation and research. Using film as a tool to to gather and amplify a multiplicity of voices from the communities you engage with along the swiss borders. Enrich this visual impression through on-site measuring, photography and drawing. Use archives and household correspondence to investigate the social history, uses, and material culture of the home and its surroundings. DESIGNING THE DOMESTIC Translate observations from the field into social, spatial and material propositions for the ordinary Swiss home and it’s neighbours. Develop your design through large-scale working models: open, sectional models that reveal the interior of the home, built in cardboard and everyday household materials. Treat these models as active, iterative design tools for testing and reworking your ideas, rather than as means of final representation. Approach the home as a site of construction, reconfiguring familiar elements and materials with a precise conceptual purpose. COMMUNICATING AND COLLABORATING Convey your ideas clearly and effectively through oral presentations. Actively participate in group projects, workshops, and open discussions. Contribute to the shared life of the studio, including cooking and eating together, as an extension of the domestic themes of the class. Manage your time, set priorities, and work with an awareness of your own skills and working methods. |
