Beschreibung
des Entwurfs-programmes

Muscle, fat, connective tissue: the soft matter of a human or animal body suspended between bone and skin. Perpetually mediating between internal and external, it enables the embodiment of mass and presence and ensures the transfer of thermal and haptic impulses. Flesh is a resilient repository, storing experiences, traces and resistance. Flesh can be understood both as social tissue as well as its necessary physical and material counterpoint, simultaneously inhabiting as well as enabling the inhabitation of space and life through an ongoing dialogue between stress, structure and surface. This understanding suggests an operative logic of applying, thickening and blurring, which supplements the necessary existential geometry with an Unschärfe, a corporeal and adaptive layer. Perceived and defined by all the senses, it passes into life through the process of densification and dissolution, rather than the construction of sharp boundaries. - - - The studio environment consists of an array of specific media – a façade model, its elevation, and its corresponding constructive section (1:20), together with plan drawings (1:100). They form the methodological focal point through which drawing and building become means of investigating the context‘s own flesh. Read through this lens, the façade reacts to what is held within and without: a plastique that can engage stress, a relief capable of communicating between forces at play. The plan drawings work in tight choreography with and beyond the media pertaining to the façade – revealing structures and opening onto the speculation of social influences coalescing in the body of the city. Geometry, material, and construction resonate here with the more literal flesh of inhabitation; what we are after, ultimately, is legibility in the interplay of these tools, regarded not as neutral documentation but as ledgers of the discipline‘s continual and necessary evolution. In an attempt to question and reflect on contemporary architectural preconceptions, we immerse ourselves in the context – in its spatial, formal, and social conditions. We will collect, arrange, isolate, and manipulate our observations, distilling gathered data into projections of forms of living for a site in Zürich‘s Aussersihl that, due to ever-growing market pressures, is under threat of becoming insular and disconnected or even of disappearing completely behind a homogenous veneer. In our search for a compositional framework, we deliberately aim to foster an environment for improvisation – an inclusive space for speculation, mistakes, the unexpected, and subjectivity, allowing all these factors to resonate methodologically, formally, and socially. Accepting the site‘s high potential for densification and conscious of the need for affordable housing, but also highly aware of the fragility of established social networks apparent, we aim to question the dominant profit-driven market mechanisms at play. Countering these exploitative forces with optimism, we explore socially responsible and sustainable scenarios for the future of the morphologically and historically heterogeneous urban fabric. The site calls for interventions of varying intensity: from precise adjustments within the existing structure to more autonomous and independent extensions, both horizontal and vertical.

Thematische und methodische Schwerpunkte

Entwurf, Konstruktion, Staedtebau, Landschaftsarchitektur, Handwerk, Zeichnung, Modellbau, Fotografie, hybride Arbeitsmethoden, digitale / physische Manipulation

Lernziele

Our objective is to generate knowledge through active engagement in the development of an adaptive and inclusive design methodology – one that incorporates diverse voices and perspectives, and that builds upon existing contexts together with their physical and social traces and insights. This approach seeks to anticipate and accommodate future change, whilst simultaneously recognising the potential and value inherent in the unfinished.
