Beschreibung
des Entwurfs-programmes

The studio explores transformation strategies emerging from a specific and precise understanding of a place and its connections to broader conditions. We will work across scales: revealing opportunities, from hands-on construction to the complexities of the contemporary city. Through observation we will trace layers and fragments that connect the detail to its territory. By looking for what is there, we highlight the potentials of what it could become. HANDS-ON We will spend the first five weeks of the semester at the Stierli-Areal, a former industrial facility in Oerlikon. Unused today, and with an uncertain future due to its unique position between train tracks, we will test the site’s potential for transformation, revealing its exceptional qualities with one-to-one interventions and actions. Group projects will emerge from interaction with the existing structure. This method asks for understanding specifically what is already there, to then identify what can be amplified. The conditions of the existing place will be improved, with the aim of triggering possible future appropriations of the spaces. ZIMEYSA The back and forth of one-to-one with broader scales will happen in Zimeysa, in Geneva. This area embodies the complexity of the city and its scattered urban condition. It appears as a palimpsest made of many layers of activities and uses that accumulated over time. Its richness lies in its difficulty to be described or classified, in the diversity of uses and the in-between spaces that mapping often fails to capture. Zimeysa offers an opportunity to develop and test concrete transformation strategies. The work ranges from collective making to personal observation. Put together, these subjective readings form an inventory of potentials, a collective exploration and a way of protecting what would otherwise disappear without being recognized. The projects will aim to support diversity, hybridity and coexistence, moving beyond rigid zoning to explore the encounters between housing, work and the activities that make up the contemporary city.

Lernziele

We will explore strategies of transformation at multiple scales: from one-to-one constructions and detailed site explorations to critical architectural proposals. Our approach will move fluidly between territory and detail, combining hands-on making with precise understanding of existing structures. The first semester is dedicated to exploring possibilities. Understanding and testing different tools and methods, the goal is to discover and test how to keep and enhance the existing qualities of a place. In the second semester, work is continued in groups, developing critical approaches to a place and its potential transformations. At the end of the year, all the material will come together as a shared proposal of concrete strategies for transformation of the contemporary city. The process is as important as the result. We work towards an end, but not necessarily a completion. SHARING KNOWLEDGE The studio is a common gathering of knowledge. Throughout the year, we will regularly share and discuss work in different formats, exchanging perspectives with other students and invited guests. These encounters will broaden our understanding and enrich the projects with expert insights.
