Beschreibung |
Ever increasing in size, Zurich’s cooperative housing projects are reaching the scale of urban megastructures. Yet, their sheer size rarely testifies to their social achievement or embodies the courageous gesture that recalls their historic legacy. While large-scale architecture is often associated with power, speculation, and individualism, we want to gain a new understanding of big urban form. We want to embrace the large scale and express the ambition of the collective. In our design studio BIG LIFE we will design large cooperative housing projects that reclaim Zurich’s urban skyline and occupy a place of pride in the city’s public consciousness. We want to question the hermetic nature of the heroic by drawing critical inspiration from late-modern, Metabolist, and non-canonical architecture, and contemporary art practices. We will speculate on open forms and composite figures that allow for growth and transformation, exploring mass as a formal and social condition. |
