THE ECONOMY OF THE PROJECT II - METAMORPHOSIS |
| |
Beschreibung des Entwurfs-programmes |
Architectural space is shaped from the dialogue between the world of facts and the world of ideas and one cannot exist without the presence of the other.
Architecture is the expression of its time and architects, through the medium of space, are then called to translate their own awareness of a specific way of living in a specific context.
Context is intended as a sum of scientific agents that form its being in a specific locus today. Architecture exists in the threshold between a scientific understanding of the context in which we operate and the phenomenological investigation of the forms of living we want to project on it. When both are translated into the design process, their encounter generates architecture.
Context is meant as the representation of the data inherent to the listed below clusters:
- Real Estate Context: the economical laws and systems that govern the market;
- Normative Context: the series of regulations that frame our interventions;
- Environmental Context: the natural agents that exist and from which we give form to Energy;
- Matter Context: the physical substance that molds our spaces;
The consciousness and acquaintance of this data embedded and instrumentalized as part of the design process gives rise to the economy of the project. Each cluster will be treated in an analytical way and processed through tools that are able to put into evidence their meaning in order to extrapolate criteria for design strategies.
The Governance of the economy of the project through Technology, at the service of Architecture, drives efficiency and precision, raising continuous awareness across the design process. |

METAMORPHOSIS
This semester will investigate the topic of Metamorphosis.
As in Ovid’s play “Metamorphosis” characters are changed not only in form but in substance. Niobe becomes a rock, Narcissus becomes a flower, Arachne becomes a spider.
Metamorphosis doesn’t just change what you look like but changes what you are. It is not about
change in perception or appearance, it is about a crucial change in essence that creates a life cycle, a new organism. Metamorphosis describes a radical change from one thing to another within a living organism or from one organism to another.
TASK
Students will be asked to take a position towards existing buildings in an existing context questioning the hidden potential for a possible new life. A strategy will be then formulated and translated into space, defining a new living form for the existing building(s), rooted in the interpretation and awareness of the context.
The goal is to develop forms of living that could potentially arise from the given building(s), that are a manifestation of our time, a declination, a new trajectory of experiencing space rather than the result of predetermined conventions inherited from the past. Are there alternatives to the action of demolition or traditional refurbishment for the transformation of these into new forms of architecture?
Students will work in groups of two. Eighteen plots, scattered all around the Swiss context, selected from the Real Market and engaged with an existing building(s) will trigger eighteen new forms of living.
We will reflect on the topic of Metamorphosis, looking at the existing building(s) as organisms in translation that could reembody into a different configuration, by understanding their essence and stressing possible transformations that could arise from each specific DNA. Form and space will develop into a new Organism.
The studio doesn’t believe in an a-priori refurbishment. The design position should arise from a precise economical strategy and spatial strive, sustainable within the framework of the context.
Students will be asked to project their vision of forms of living that range from a house for one person to the scale of housing and to add a secondary function that will enable not only a new configuration of a possible symbiosis, but also a new Socio-Economical model from which the Project and the user could benefit.
The design strategy will be the result of the collision between the analysis of the Existing building(s), the awareness of the context - as a set of categorical facts - together with the design intention. One will reinforce the other and the three will give form to architecture, enabling an open field for experimentation.
TOOLS
A reader, intended as a manual, will serve as a general guideline of how to extrapolate design criteria from context data. It will highlight the different clusters that shape our context in order to define possible starting points for analyzing and developing a design strategy.
The design process will be supported by the use of technological tools, based on the belief that architecture has to be investigated three-dimensionally and technology is a necessary tool from which we, Architects, have to benefit during the process. Virtual Reality and Cinemagraphs will be a constant medium through which the design will be developed and Projects will be discussed in the studio.
External support will be provided by the studio with the weekly presence of Hyperlab, a team of digital consultants. Input lessons and 1:1 support for the use of the different technologies requested will be given.
The course will integrate a series of Input lectures which will run in parallel with the Design. Experts will share their position and Knowledge on how to tackle the context clusters as the methodological base of the design course. |
