Beschreibung des Entwurfs-programmes |
In early Gartenstädte, the table stood at the heart of domestic life – a place of social convergence where produce from nearby gardens was prepared and shared. It embodied a connection between inside and outside, cultivation and consumption, symbolizing a relationship between the home and its surroundings. Anchoring our exploration around the table as both a physical and conceptual element, we focus on how food production, social interaction, and ecology intertwine within housing projects.
The Gartenstadt concept, rooted in Ebenezer Howard’s vision of small, self-sufficient towns offering healthier living conditions for the working class, envisions homes and their outdoor surroundings as one environment. However, today’s urban densification – characterized by expanding built areas, infrastructure, and sealed surfaces – threatens green spaces, trees, and biodiversity, questioning the relation between inside and outside. To create liveable cities, we must rethink the boundaries of the entrance door and embrace the critical role of the landscape in fostering well-being.
This semester, we focus on Winterthur, a city with a rich garden city heritage. What would a contemporary garden city look like, and how might it balance increased density with the essential need for nature and community? As Donna Haraway writes in Staying with the Trouble: “The world is made by those who make it with others. To become-with is to co-create and to be open to new forms of relation that are neither human-centred nor solely human.” We aim to explore innovative, inclusive design strategies that integrate people and other species, from interior to outdoor spaces, guided by circular principles in resource use, water management, and biodiversity. We will analyse the thresholds and borders in existing Gartenstädte to uncover ways in which added density can coexist within existing and new habitats. Our objective is to repair the often-neglected relationship between home interiors and their exterior counterparts – spaces that support ecological and social connection.
By reimagining the table as a site for preparation, exchange, and shared experience, we seek to revitalize the foundational ideas of the original garden city for contemporary challenges. In the first week, we will begin by building a table for the studio, which will serve as the central point around which we will work collaboratively throughout the semester. Specific workshops and lectures will provide an in-depth exploration of the topics at hand, with ideas being developed through drawings, models, synthesis drawings, and photographs capturing the core concepts and narratives of each project. Students will work in groups to stimulate positive dialogue and foster a collaborative design process. This approach will encourage the exchange of ideas and the development of innovative solutions that respond to the intricate relationships between inside, outside, and the natural world.

Lernziele |
Critical thinking:
- develop a critical position to a sight and an an exercise
- understand work requirements, manage your time carefully and prioritize being aware of your personal skills.
Working methodology:
- conduct qualitative site analysis through photography and observational drawing
- use archives to conduct systematic analysis into social history, uses, materials, etc.
- assimilate small, fragmentary observations into a broad understanding of the site and the project
- clearly and effectively convey your ideas through oral presentations
Architectural project:
- develop a structural, societal, constructional and environmental concept for the project
- develop this concept into an architectural project whilst understanding technical, spatial and programmatic conditions
- situate your position using references of historical, cultural or other creative fields
Learning Objectives
- incorporate information and inspiration from input lectures
Representation:
- develop a way of looking of your site by using photography
- develop model making skills of small conceptual models, as well as working models made of everyday household materials with precise conceptual purpose
- develop an understanding of using different media of representation to strengthen your project idea
- choose the frame of a plan, drawing, image etc. What do you need to tell your story?
- each project may find its own method of representation based on its concept.
Engagement in the studio:
- actively participate in group projects, workshops and open discussions
- actively listen to others and try to understand their perspective
