Beschreibung
des Entwurfs-programmes

Dear Student, Imagine the productive, ecologically sustainable and just European city of the 21st century. Imagine a site in the European capital on the verge of transformation. Imagine the controversies and conflicting demands that will arise when you want to implement your ideal vision. Imagine your naivety when confronted with European urban reality. Imagine learning, teaching and practicing the complex and intriguing reality of urban transformation. Imagine joining our team to cooperatively discover and invent what we call "Newrope". In this studio, we will focus on the site of Schaerbeek Formation. One of the last major transformation areas of the European and Belgian capital. Located in the north of Brussels, surrounded by the canal, port industry, railway tracks and a natural reserve, Schaerbeek Formation turns out to represent a controversy in which two of the most important urban issues of the present clash: on the one hand the productive and on the other hand the ecologically sustainable European city of the 21st century. The studio’s point of departure is an excursion to Brussels. From there, we start to investigate, strategically intervene and possibly change the future perspective of the project. We work closely with some of the main actors that will influence the future of the site and will try to strategically redraft the debate based on precise investigations, unexpected interventions and mutual trust. In order to engage with these kinds of transformations, a clear positioning, the articulation of your motivations and a culture of dialogue are vital. The studio takes place in the newly established Design in Dialog Lab at ONA where we will discover the multi-faceted reality of urban transformation and develop a strong catalogue of different and unique insights, design proposals, campaigns and policies which we will bring back to Brussels at the beginning of 2020. Looking forward to your enrolment.

Thematische und methodische Schwerpunkte

Entwurf, Staedtebau, Modellbau, Visualisierungen, Design in Dialogue

Lernziele

Sustainable urban transformation and design projects can only be successful if they involve the motivations and ambitions of a diverse range of urban actors and interest groups. Hence the abilities to cooperate with various stakeholders and to shape design in dialogue processes become important skills for architects and designers. Within the studio, we will not only train methods for developing visionary urban design proposals, but also develop essential strategic and analytical skills and test Design in Dialogue situations with real stakeholders.
