Thema

Urban Metamorphosis Medellín

Beschreibung
des Entwurfs-programmes

Making urban prototypes in the former city centre of Medellin's heart. Existing and new infrastructure concepts need to be re-invented for a new paradigm of what the design for a city of production and a Center for the 4th Industrial revolution (C4IR) can be. The studio will research and design, together with students in Medellín, how the making, production, fabrication of the city itself can be at the heart of a novel industry. The city teaches us valuable lessons for development after winning the 2016 Global Smart City Award, and presenting three factors of the transformational potential of work in Medellin: 1.) physical environment 2.) programmatic transformation 3.) people's resilience. The studio will design, inside a 60 /ha project area, prototypical urban and architectural projects on different scales in coalition with local stakeholders. Students will take a role developing solutions in collaboration with local partners Medellín City planning office, academia, and "RutaN" our domestic partners of the Swiss / World Economic Forum. We will engage in a multi-disciplinary approach that builds upon common ground. By tackling real-world urban challenges, this studio is looking to create qualities for the regeneration of public- and workspaces, and housing, that transcend the commercial plane. The studio is informed by the chairs ongoing research on our book on SDG 11. The SECO research on urban transformation in COL links researching, learning and making the city an integrative design laboratory for the people living in the city.

Thematische und methodische Schwerpunkte

Entwurf, Staedtebau, Modellbau, Visualisierungen, Tool-Box: Urban Design, Representation (Digital and Physical 3D-Modeling, in combination Film, and Graphic Design)

Lernziele

Students will learn the tools and engage in a hands-on process of our Chair’s “method-design” to be a legitimate actors of change. Together we will identify and visualize stakeholder networks and engage in a transformative design process. We will translate our conceptual urban development project into a concrete design project. We will generate a design narrative with quantitative and qualitative information, together with mapping and visualizing real prototypes on different scales within a policy-relevant message for broader applications. We will teach students how the narratives will be visualized and communicated in analogue and digital tools. Students will research by studying existing international test cases, formulating their design hypothesis, planning urban scenarios, modelling their designs through various formats, and communicating their intentions in a series of critiques and reviews. Students will be encouraged to develop an individual and critical position on the potential role of the architect to guide a design process within broader social, political and economic systems. A series of lectures, screenings, readings, and discussions will accompany the design program. Selected experts will join reviews from the fields of urban planning, landscape, building technologies, graphic design, as well as experts from the Chair. (integral Ruedi Baur, ZRH / Paris, Head of City Planning Alejandro Restreppo, Medellin) Workshops and in-studio tutorials will be provided to train students effective methods of representing complex ideas through visual media.
