OF PUBLIC INTEREST |
|
|
Beschreibung |
Im öffentlichen Interesse is an administrative phrase, the term reached for when a private claim is overridden, justifying expropriation, subsidy, exception. Read plainly, it means something simpler: of interest to the public. Places people need rather than places people choose, somewhere to start something, exchange freely, be around others without having paid for the right. The two meanings have drifted apart, yet the gap between them is less a problem to close than a field to cultivate a spatial negotiation of the city. It is within every project that architects should ask what they can offer back. Not what should exist for everyone in the abstract, but what can a building do for the city? Architecture gives form to this negotiation. Through open design it aligns conflicting interests with the tools available to it, rather than imagining a building free of them, and it is this task, not any particular brief or commission, that architects need to place at the center of their mission. CIVIC PUBLIC LAB Social interaction has become an economic good. Even in public space, it increasingly happens online, incentivised, measured and directed by principles that stay obscure. The same economic logic can be observed outdoors, where logistics and efficiency often come first. The closest thing to a community today may be the one experienced as passengers, tied to operational revenue, silent, contactless and anonymous. European cities still offer a wide array of spaces for specific communities, yet many of the traditionally large, everyday spaces are now in question. The burden of free assembly falls ever more on the outdoor realm, a freedom that affordable, design-driven indoor space, accessible to all, has rarely been asked to match. THE ZURICH QUESTION Zurich has deficits, but also potential, for new spaces of public interest. Answering this requires a close reading of the city, and a vision for it. In a collective investigation, we will annotate a city map and build a catalogue of public interest: spatial types that are a unique gift to the city, intentional and accidental, successful and failed. Research will span from operation models to material properties. THE KIND OF SPACES THAT OFFER SOMETHING BACK Not all buildings are aimed at becoming social infrastructure. They become so by way of appropriation, and by remaining open, governed with vision and built to resist. They become resting places, or places to meet, read, eat, or play in. This is especially true in cities, when the weather is too hot, too cold, too wet. These buildings become safe shelters, a kind of indoor Freiraum, in Zurich and beyond. With guests who have designed or operate spaces of public interest, we will exchange visions and illusions, and what, ideally, is left of them. Taking a catalogued type, a mapped site and a tool, the studio will negotiate through scale and program, the design of inside and outside environments. Designing, in effect, a public interest prototype. |

Lernziele |
WE, TECHNOLOGICAL ANIMAL Continuing our explorations from the previous semester at ETH, we will build and expand on the gathered knowledge of Capable Structures and In/Appropriate Technology; a building type and a building construction method we are inherently interested in as a group. STUDIO WORK As in TEN, we will work as a group of individuals, each bringing their own interests and skills into dialogue. Our language will be the plan, section, structure, facade or threshold. Grounded in principles of critical, open and exploratory design methods, supported with various formats for shared reflection, the approach aims to reach what could be described as collective design intelligence in service of architecture and an architect. The studio aims for an open, collaborative environment, with high encouragement for experimentation and chance. The work we do will play out over three connected blocks dedicated to particular design methods, materials, and outcomes. |
