Discomfort Zone

Beschreibung
des Entwurfs-programmes

Discomfort Zone starts from the observation that architecture has historically built its value around comfort, relegating unease to the hidden, the private, and the awkward. Comfort has been translated into spatial parameters, building standards, and typological assumptions that are standardized and universalized, normalizing certain bodies as the measure for design while others are expected to adapt and comply. This process smooths cities, stabilizes patterns of use, abstracts bodies, and obscures the political dimension of spatial norms. The studio positions design as an active mechanism to intervene in, reconfigure, and test these norms. Its questions are structured through overlapping theoretical lenses of bodies and norms, public exposure, collective memory, and sensory deprivation, offering multiple entry points for architectural and spatial investigation. Designing for Discomfort The semester is structured as a sequence of increasing complexity, beginning with four fast tests and culminating in one sustained collective installation. Throughout the process, the body is treated as a site of knowledge, and spatial situations are developed, designed, and activated at 1:1 scale. Students develop prototypes, spatial interventions, and situational experiments that work on conventions of use, normativity, and control. These projects bring material choices, regulations, and spatial arrangements into question, and serve as a basis for exploring alternative ways of organizing space through bodily experience. The studio is organized as a shared working environment in which students learn to develop positions collectively, negotiate responsibilities, and articulate design decisions together. Invited guests contribute at key moments, offering external perspectives and situating the work within a broader architectural and cultural context. Sticking with the trouble Enacting, extending, and staying with discomfort allows it to operate as a productive tension within architectural work. It reveals what appears universal as culturally embedded and foregrounds how different bodies perceive, endure, and negotiate space in different ways. Sensory, physiological, and psychological modes of perception expand the understanding of the body as relational, implicated, and vulnerable. When brought into relation with architecture, this perspective opens questions around static forms of containment and environmental control. Through reflection, experimentation, discussion, and performative actions, the studio examines how an expanded understanding of the body might inform alternative approaches to architectural design, spatial organization, and the shaping of environments.
