Beschreibung |
The single-family house is the smallest social unit of many Swiss villages and small towns and their vibrant communities. These communities are bound together by their children’s schools, a lively association life, the availability of good local jobs and a functioning commuter infrastructure. Yet, the houses outgrow their owners’ needs after the children have moved out. Left with their large houses, many elderly people are faced with the problem of social isolation and the dilemma of how to reduce their living spaces without moving away, without being uprooted from their tightly knit network of friends and neighbours. At the same time, many young people find it difficult to afford their dream of rural living. In the design studio HOME ALONE, we want to transform a number of single-family houses. We want to look for alternative, more sustainable ways of understanding and inhabiting the existing houses and the land they stand on. |
